WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

The other day I was waiting downstairs to pick my kids from school bus. The bus came late because of some technical issues. As soon as the bus reached the stop, children jumped out and rushed in. There were many children to our building. We all got into the lift. Then my little one started playing with the buttons in the lift.  Instead of first floor, he pressed all the buttons from up to down.

Before I could do anything, the lift started moving upward, that too in a frantic speed. We were all worried. I tried to press some buttons to stop the lift. Nothing worked. But something went wrong. We heard a terrifying sound like a warning alarm. Children started crying. I held them tight and tried to console them. They were all panicked. I saw a danger situation flashing before my eyes. We couldn’t stop the lift or do anything. What answer should I give to this negligence? The sound increased. It was unbearable and would break our ears. I shut my ears with my hands. My heartbeat increased. I was not prepared for a fight or a flight; I just froze for a moment. Then I heard a big sound. Something happened. I could not open my eyes. Full of brightness as if a glaring light was beaming into my eyes. Still, I could feel the jerking of the lift. Somehow, I opened my eyes and found that we were in the sky. We were crying aloud throwing our hands in the air. Suddenly, we felt a dip.  I understood what really happened. In that great speed, the lift came up and broke open the roof of the building. For a few seconds we were flung into air along with the lift. The lift's top had fully removed. Now it is coming down.  And it landed on the roof of our building. Our condition was miserable. We were thoroughly beaten-up by the incident and sat there in the lift for some time to take a proper breath. Soon I checked the children inside the lift. Everyone safe. I helped them to climb out of the lift. We saw there the maintenance workers of the building. They were sitting there doing their work. They were not affected by all these incidents. Though they witnessed everything, they went on with their work as if they were used to these sorts of mischiefs daily. Anyway, I climbed down the stairs with the children. My heart was still beating harder than usual.  Suddenly, I woke up and found myself lying on the sofa fully exhausted. ‘Was it all a dream?’ I couldn’t believe. I was angry that how silly am I to have such a foolish dream.

But then I heard a sound from inside the room. It's that same alarming sound I heard while I was in the lift. I was shaken. 'Isn’t it all done?' I rushed to the spot. There I saw my children playing with my radio by changing the stations. What a terrible din!

We often say sweet dreams. But why most of our dreams pull us from our beds? Why do we see people who has no connection with us? Why always a dog chases us to the terrace, and we fall off from there? Why we are awake in our subconscious and roam around while the rest of the world is at rest. And why all our escapades fail?

I tried to interpret those dreams though I am not an expert. May be our brain is visualizing things that we could not fulfil. May be your mind has set out to do what you had procrastinated. I believe everything is a by-product. Let me breathe through it, to see what it leads me to. To know what it unfolds. But I felt it is an extreme end as it is a kind of psychological approach. I want to drop it here. Because I believe that everything in its extreme has an opposite effect. Extreme light makes your eyes blind. Extreme cold makes a burning sensation. Hence I decided to go for something lighter.

A dream may be a subconscious programming. Our brain needs off-line time for processing and learning new things and they may do this during we are asleep. I felt, a dreaming brain can build stories better than a brain that is awake. And I think it is good for a writer who is always in search of new stories for their work.

Even our naps are filled with dreams. May be our brain is trying to solve problems out of the box. And I believe that anyone who has achieved great heights in their life are those who dreamt out of the box, as said in my favourite lines, ‘I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.’

In fact, dreams are nothing to be taken this seriously. I would like to define them as fleeting moments that make us happy, sad, anxious and what more. They are indeed simple. And its beauty is in its simplicity.
